Power of Ideas 1 (2017)

Terry Fox Secondary Power of Ideas – Feb 2nd, 2017

The Power of Ideas event was a smashing success with over 1000 visitors from the community enjoying the evening open house and the majority of our 1500 students getting to participate during the day. There was a ton of fun things going on! See all the  Exhibits

It’s hard to photograph the scope of the event, but Anita Alberto did a phenomenal job capturing the excitement. See some of the photos below. It was such a great event that we are planning to do Power of Ideas 2 on Wednesday, April 11th from 1 pm to 8pm. See you there!

The Power of Ideas Tour is came to Terry Fox Secondary on Feb 2nd, 2017 as it traveled across Canada as a part of Innovation150 to celebrate our nation’s 150th birthday. Fox was chosen as one of 80 stops across the country in 2017.

This exciting science exhibition was brought to us by The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics fully staffed and included 3 main exhibits designed to inspire the innovator in everyone. There was an interactive walkthrough exhibit in the main gym, an engaging presentation in the theatre and a makerspace with 3D printers and laser cutters in one classroom.

Entrance was free and featured our own side attractions like Science Rocks (live music by our Rock the Fox students), a Big Bang skit by our Drama students, a Mayor’s address, a STEM Science Fair contest, Robot Sumo Tables, a Student Art Gallery, a Public Costume Contest, Demo Domain, Career Corridor, Author’s Alley and Science Movie Marathons. Food trucks were on hand selling Hawking Hot Dogs and Dark Matter Cola.

What is the Perimeter Institute?

The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is a world class physics research facility in Waterloo, Ontario that all Canadians can be very proud of. It began with our own Canadian innovator Mike Lazaridis (founder of BlackBerry) making a personal donation of $100 million dollars to found the Perimeter Institute. The physicists at Perimeter are working to understand the most fundamental properties of our universe. The extensive list of studies includes neutrinos, superfluids, black holes, dark matter, gravity waves, string theory, quantum computing and the Higgs Boson. Perimeter researchers have received numerous awards for their work including two back to back Nobel Prizes for Physics in 2015 and 2016! In addition to research, Perimeter also has an educational outreach mandate that includes inviting students and teachers into their facility for intensive summer workshops. I was fortunate to be one of the 40 teacher participants from all over the world in 2014. They also create classroom resource kits for physics teachers that have reached over a million students to date.

6 Contests were launched to help promote the event. $100 Prize  Each!
